In fact, there was a common belief due to culture of the time that the Gospel (the "good news" of what God did for everyone) was sent for the Jewish people alone. Thankfully for many of us in the US, God made it clear that the Gospel was meant for EVERYONE! Cornelius was a Roman Centurion & is recorded in the Bible as the first convert that was not a Jew (ie.
